What's deducted from your salary
In South Africa, three statutory deductions reduce your gross salary to your take-home pay: PAYE income tax (calculated on the SARS sliding scale), UIF (1% of your salary up to R177.12/month), and any retirement-fund contributions (RA, pension or provident fund).
Some employers also deduct medical-aid premiums, group life cover and union dues. ZACalc focuses on the SARS-side deductions — add other deductions manually if you want to project your exact bank deposit.
A worked example
On R30 000/month gross (R360 000/year), an under-65 with no retirement contribution and 2 medical-aid members pays roughly R3 953/month PAYE (R47 436/year) plus R177.12 UIF, giving a take-home of about R25 870/month. Add an RA of R3 000/mo and your PAYE drops by roughly R770/mo because R36 000 of your income becomes tax-deductible.
